At IVA High, we help students define and engage in academic and co-curricular pursuits that best prepare them for their college AND career choices. We have several programs that guide students to explore their interests and open opportunities: College Counseling, Advisory, Paid Internship Program, and Dual Enrollment with Long Beach Community College (LBCC).
Guidance
From day one of freshman year, we have a plan to help students learn, grow, and explore the world around them. We help them think about life beyond high school.
Exploration
We want our students to explore the possibilities! They can take interest surveys, look at career options, and access college planning resources.
Our counseling team can guide students (and families) through all aspects of the college admission process, from developing appropriate college lists to completing applications, writing essays, and applying for financial aid.
If they don’t know what life after high school looks like, they can use our Dual Enrollment partnership with LBCC to try out a traditional college course or Career Technical Education (CTE) courses. CTE programs prepare students for a variety of careers beyond traditional academic settings. Courses taken through Dual Enrollment with LBCC earn credit in high school and college, a great way for students to get ahead.
Preparation
In preparing students for life after high school and their future careers, we share job prep tools like resume templates, interview tips, and support applying for jobs and internships. We also offer Adulting 101, which helps students learn real-world skills like budgeting, time management, and professional communication.
IVA High’s weekly Advisory program provides a safe and small group environment to develop intellectual and social character, as well as developing a roadmap to college and career. Teachers nurture students’ character development through conversation, relationship-building, goal-setting, structured reflection, team counseling exercises, and personal encouragement.
Dual Enrollment
Through our College and Career Access Pathways (CCAP) dual-enrollment partnership with Long Beach City College (LBCC), 9th-12th graders can take tuition-free courses that earn college credit. The course offerings are diverse and interesting – students can explore trades like automotive and construction, or fields like creative design, business, and child development.
Students can request Individual Dual Enrollment (IDE) to choose their own courses and/or enroll in our pathway partnership courses (CCAP). In either program, IVA High pays for the tuition, fees, and materials.
The CCAP partnership is designed for IVA High students to earn transferable Cal-GETC and/or College Technical Education (CTE), gaining valuable skills and saving both time and money on their college journey in a supportive and accessible environment. IVA High offers 12 units a year taught by a college professor on IVA High’s campus! These courses are also CSU and/or UC approved for transfer. Students who enroll and pass college courses also qualify for paid internships. In addition, students who complete 30 units of dual enrollment college credit by graduation are eligible to transfer to a University in California!
One third of IVA High students have taken at least one college course and about half of these students have taken two or more courses. In addition, our students have a 96% pass rate, compared to a 56% pass rate of other high school students.
You can see a list of colleges former IVA High students attended on our School Profile.
Paid Internship Program
High school should prepare for college and career. We have partnered with EXP and created our own on-campus internship program to offer every student a paid internship if they want to pursue one. Students have received internships in a variety of industries.
