How IVA High Students Are Already Earning College Credits

What if high school wasn’t just preparation for the future, but the beginning of it?

At IVA High, that question shapes how we think about learning. Our dual-enrollment partnership with Long Beach City College (LBCC) program puts real, accredited college courses directly on our campus, giving students the chance to earn college credits, build college habits, and discover who they are as learners all before graduation day.

The Numbers Tell the Story

92% of IVA High seniors graduate with 6 or more FREE college credits from LBCC.

That’s nearly every senior walking across the stage already holding a piece of their college future. 30% of our seniors graduate with 12 or more college credits, a full semester’s worth of coursework completed before they ever enroll as a full-time college student. This is another reason why IVA High was recognized by California as an Exemplary Dual Enrollment School in 2026.

For families thinking about the real costs, those numbers represent something tangible: time saved and a college-ready mindset.

Courses That Connect to Real Life

IVA High believes learning should be personal and relevant. Our collaboration with LBCC gives students a choice from a range of college classes that connect to their curiosity, their career interests, and the world they’re stepping into.

  • Introduction to Public Speaking — Students research, reason, and deliver speeches to live audiences, building the kind of voice that carries in any room.
  • Introduction to Psychology — Students start asking better questions about themselves and others by exploring the science of the mind and human behavior.
  • Introduction to Sociology  — Students explore the development of personality, the role of culture, group dynamics, and social organization and institutions.
  • Career Planning and College Success — Students dig into their own strengths, interests, and goals to build a real framework for the decisions ahead.
  • Elements of Group Communication —  Students learn to use problem-solving, critical thinking, and team-building strategies to achieve group goals in a variety of contexts. Students also develop their interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Essentials of Photography — Students develop their eye for visual storytelling through hands-on camera work and composition.
  • Introduction to Art —Students explore their innate creative ability and learn a broad overview of historical and contemporary art concepts.

These are just a few of the options available. From Information Technology, to Public Health to the Fashion Industry, students explore pathways that connect real academic work to real interests.

Career Inspiration In Real Time

The credits matter. And so does what happens to students along the way. When learners step into a college course, they discover something new about themselves as thinkers and catch a glimpse of their possible future career.

Ava, one of our students, found exactly that:

“Taking college courses has taught me how to manage my time and take responsibility for my own learning. It helped me to start building habits now that I did not have in middle school. I hold my college classes to a higher standard and really focus on completing my work so that I can continue to pursue my goal of being a firefighter.”

Ava walked away with credits and a clearer sense of her dream career.
