The area is economically diverse and the student body is culturally diverse with a population that is 35% Latino, 32% African American, 12% Multi-racial, 5% Cambodian, 12% Caucasian, 2% Filipino, 2% Hawaiian.

School

IVA High is a co-ed, public, non-profit, charter high school enrolling 125 students in grades 9–12. The school opened in 2016 and graduated its first senior class in the spring of 2017. The average class size is 23 students, and the student adult ratio is 8:1.
IVA High is accredited by Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). IVA High also holds membership in the California Charter School Association.

Curriculum

The academic program is organized around the rigorous and supportive Intellectual Virtues Model. The goal of an intellectual virtues educational model is to foster meaningful growth in the personal qualities of a good thinker or learner: curiosity, wonder, attentiveness, open-mindedness, creativity, intellectual tenacity, and related traits.

Each IVA High class is counted as 5 credits. 30-40 credits per semester is the maximum course load, classes are a semester long, and classes meet 4 out of 5 school days to allow for block scheduling. Our curriculum exceeds state content standards and California’s “A-G” university admissions requirements.

The partnership with Long Beach City College (LBCC) and the College and Career Access Pathway (CCAP) enables students in grades 9-12 to take college courses and earn college credits, both on IVA High campus and LBCC campus. Twelve transferable units of College and Career Technical Education are offered on IVA High’s campus every year as part of the CCAP agreement. Students can also enroll in Individual Dual Enrollment (IDE) courses and customize their dual enrollment courses.
