Lunch Program

IVA High offers the National School Lunch Program!

California became the first state to implement a Universal Meals Program for school children. IVA High is a participant in the National School Lunch Program, meaning that every student at IVA High has access to a free lunch and a free breakfast every day of the school year. We are very happy to be part of this program, and continue to make it our own in new and creative ways!

At IVA High, we serve a community breakfast in each classroom during the first block of the day, where teachers eat alongside students. This helps to model starting your day off with a healthy meal, and removes the stigma of eating school food. A variety of snacks are available to students throughout the day and free lunch options are provided in the afternoon for ALL students.

Meals are selected by students themselves, as part of a student-led Food Committee. Our students meet monthly to review menu options, taste new dishes and select the items they would like to eat for lunch. They have advocated for more vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free items, which we have been able to provide. This level of engagement on behalf of students, as well as eating breakfast alongside teachers during class, has led to a huge increase in meals served! Our students are happy, healthy and fed!

The community and cross-curricular impact of IVA High’s school lunch program is another point of celebration.

Students expressed curiosity about nutritional information, reviewing menu data and learning how to read nutritional labels – which they have studied further in their Math and Health classes.
Students also utilize the extra fruit and veggies in our Cooking class by making smoothies, sandwiches, salads and more!
Additionally, on Fridays, we donate any meals we have leftover to a local homeless shelter, benefiting our neighbors in need.

As part of this program, we are required to obtain lunch applications from each of our families. These completed lunch applications will qualify our school for important funding opportunities, both for the nutrition program, and also for other services such as after school programs, tutoring, and more.
